City of Toronto Media Relations has issued the following news release:
The City of Toronto will host Remembrance Day activities and exhibits starting November 1 at several Toronto History Museums, giving residents of all ages an opportunity to learn about local history while honouring Toronto’s fallen soldiers. The public can participate in exhibitions, tours and family activities suitable for younger children, as well as the annual Fort York Remembrance Day ceremony at the Strachan Avenue Military Cemetery.
Poppy projects
Visitors can make their own poppy craft or contribute to a community poppy memorial and add the name of a loved one affected by war. Poppy activities are included with admission at these historic sites:
• Scarborough Museum on November 1, 2, 9 and 10 from noon to 4 p.m.
• Todmorden Mills on November 8 and 9 from noon to 4 p.m.
• Montgomery’s Inn on November 9 from 1 to 4 p.m.
Remembrance display in Scarborough
More than 400 Scarborough men and women served in the First World War. The Scarborough Historical Society and the Scarborough Archives will show artifacts from local soldiers, including a collection of personal and combat items belonging to George Bell, a First World War serviceman. The display at Scarborough Museum will be available daily from noon to 4 p.m. throughout November.
Eaton’s Goes to War exhibit and walking tour
During the First World War, 3,327 Eaton’s employees enlisted to serve. A photo was displayed prominently in the Eaton store each time one of them went overseas. This exhibit, which reveals the lives and sacrifices of some of those who served, takes place at Mackenzie House from November 5 to December 1 during operating hours. The exhibit is included with admission. In addition, guests can join a walking tour on November 10 from 10 a.m. to noon. Tickets for the tour ($10 plus tax) are available by email at mackenziehouse@streamintickets.com and also at the door.
Remembrance Day Tea
Montgomery’s Inn offers a special afternoon tea experience featuring World War One-era music performed by guitarist Roger Zuraw and bagpiper Dougal Bichan from 1 to 4 p.m. on November 10. Tickets ($7 plus tax) are available at the door.
Remembrance Day at Fort York
A procession led by period-uniformed military staff will leave from the west gate of Fort York National Historic Site and make its way to Strachan Avenue Military Cemetery starting at 10:45 a.m. on November 11. At 11 a.m. (“the 11th hour”), Canadian soldiers of past and recent wars will be honoured. The event will conclude at about 2 p.m.
