Proposed Redevelopment at Broadway & Bayview Avenues – Update & Call for Action

A message from The Broadway Residents’ Working Group

Proposed Redevelopment at Broadway & Bayview Avenues
Update & Call for Action
Dear Residents:

Thank you for the astounding turnout to the community consultation meeting on April 7.  Your comments conveyed a clear, strong message to City staff, Councillors and the developer that this proposal in its present form is absolutely not acceptable to our community. THIS IS NOT A DONE DEAL – WE NEED TO TAKE ACTION NOW.
To be clear, under the current zoning, the developer can build a store of approximately 50,000 sq. ft.  The developer is proposing one that is more than 75,000 sq. ft.  This is why the developer is submitting a re-zoning application.
Our neighbourhood deserves a far more considered approach to the development of this site.  We do not need a big box store that promises to introduce dramatic changes in trailer, truck and car volumes for Bayview and Broadway and surrounding streets.  Traffic jams, illegal parking and endangered pedestrians are likely outcomes.
We must prepare to develop a viable position at the OMB and to do so we will need to engage professional expertise.  We have a small fund and our thanks to those who have already contributed.  We have an urgent need to raise more funds quickly. The amount is not insignificant – we estimate that at least $20,000 is needed. The reward is however, quite significant if we can present an effective case to the OMB.  Your support is crucial to changing the path of this ill-conceived proposal.
Help by contributing to our fundraising efforts
Any amount is welcome, however we respectfully suggest a minimum of $100 or more if you can. Cheques can be made payable to Broadway Area Residents Association.  Mail to:

Help by sending a letter to the City stating your opposition
You may draft your own letter, however we have attached a template for ease of use (https://bonniebyford.com/LetterToCityfromResidentsApril2011.doc). Mail, fax or email your letter to Allen Appleby Director Community Planning and Ben DiRaimo, Planner. Contact details are at the top of the attached letter.
The developer is unsympathetic to our position and the proposal looks to exploit the site without considering the negative impact on our daily lives and safety.  We ask that you stay engaged on this important community issue.  Get in touch with neighbours and encourage them to voice their opposition and donate to our fund.
